Nelson residents the longest lived in the country

Tim Newman at the Nelson Mail reports on data from Statistics New Zealand showing men and women in Nelson as having the longest median lifespan in New Zealand. High inward migration of older people looking to retire is one contributory factor, but socioeconomic factors also came into play, according to Otago University Professor of Public Health Dr Peter Crampton :

"Housing is a very topical one, a lot of people can't afford reasonable quality warm dry housing. A wealth of evidence that connects damp mouldy housing with bad health outcomes and hospitalisations."

Oxford University’s Institute of Population Ageing blogs about the impact of city design on older people.
